A guide to participatory experiments with underutilised genetic resources Organic Eprints
Costanzo, Ambrogio; Seroplay, Ester; Rey, Frederic.
Diversifood has undertaken a series of parallel experiments, all testing the same underlying hypothesis expressed in the “working definition” that reintroducing genetic resources with a status of underutilisation can trigger benefits in provisioning agroecosystem services and supporting local, high-quality value chains, in the overall framework of agroecological systems. This booklets considers a diversity of practices and incorporates the experience of the trials and the lessons learned on how to plan and conduct such trials, including practical consideration and tips to facilitate their execution out of the controlled conditions of experimental stations while still obtaining detailed and relevant information. It includes sections on sourcing seed,...

Diversified food system: Policy to embedding crop genetic diversity in food value chains Organic Eprints
Feher, Judit; Padel, Susanne; Rossi, Adanella; Drexler, Dora; Oehen, Bernadette.
Current food systems and associated agricultural practices have led to a loss of crop diversity. The widespread adoption of genetically uniform crop varieties may also increase the vulnerability of production systems and reduce their adaptability to new environmental challenges. DIVERSIFOOD has explored different approaches aimed at increasing crop genetic diversity, and as a result, make biodiverse food available to consumers. These approaches have the potential to promote sustainable, locally adapted farming systems, provide autonomy to farmers, support local short and fair supply chains and reconnect farmers and consumers. In order to support these approaches, the following policy changes are needed: 1) The legal status of heterogeneous cultivars...

Guidance Document and Considerations for the Marketing of Biodiverse Food Products Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Padel, Susanne; Rossi, Adanella.
The prevailing food supply chains are characterised by a highly standardised food offer produced in an impoverished agricultural system. The loss of diversity in food production is not only a loss of crop species and varieties but also a loss of taste, culture and knowledge and adaptability to a changing environment. This booklet is intended to contribute to a transformation of this system by supporting the use of the biological diversity of cultures. It aims at supporting practitioners that want to enhance crop genetic diversity in agricultural systems and increase the link between consumers and producers. Moreover, the booklet contains a compilation of all the lessons learned from the valorisation of crop genetic diversity during the European research...

Innovative approaches to embed diversity in food systems: DIVERSFOOD outcomes from field to plate Organic Eprints
Underutilised crops are offering opportunities to diversify and improve farming and food systems as a response both to climate change and to social changes in food culture and uses. The choice of seed greatly determines farming practices and all stages of the food supply chain right up to the consumers’ plate. Based on DIVERSFOOD outcomes, this Booklet #6 proposes a number of thought-provoking concepts, methods and tools. It aims to inspire stakeholders who wish to develop diversity in food systems, presenting 10 novel ideas and approaches that support innovation embedding diversity in food systems from the field to the plate.

THE SEED SOURCES OF ORGANIC FARMERS IN ITALY Organic Eprints
Bocci, Riccardo; Ortolani, Livia; Micheloni, Cristina.
This paper presents the result of the survey done in 2010 by AIAB on the seed sources in Organic Agriculture (OA) in Italy. The aim of this work is to better understand and clarify the relationships between the formal and informal seed system (Almekinders and Louwaars, 2000) and quantify the role of the latter in OA. In a time where the choice of the varieties to grow will be in the hands of public institutions or seed industries (GRAIN, 2008), it is pivotal to check the needs of Organic farmers and the seed they are sowing. The questions addressed were: a. Are Organic farmers still self-producing seeds? b. Are they using only varieties listed in Official National Catalogue? c. What is the role of old varieties not listed anymore or local varieties in...
